The five best guitar players you have never heard of...

but you should.
Let's try these.
Les Dudek (he did the solo on the Allman Bros. "Ramblin Man")
Tommy Bolin (played with Deep Purple and The James Gang) from Sioux City Iowa passed away in 1976."Teaser" is a masterpice. ONE AWESOME CAT!
Rory Gallagher probably the best musician from Ireland (with apologies to U2 and Van Morrison)passed in 1995.
Roy Buchanan He played the saddest guitar ever, passed in 1988, the end of a troubled life.
Lee Ritenour
I have been listening to him since "Captain Fingers" in 1975. Awesome fusion player.

Honorable mention goes to
Al DiMeola
and John McLaughlin

who did i miss?

Here's one who hardly ever gets mentioned but belongs at the top of the anyon'e list of unheralded guitarists. Django Reinhardt. And, Kent, he is in a class with John McLaughlin. He was AMAZING! Finally, I would have to insist that Robert Johnson belongs on that list. Keith Richards tells this story about the first time Brian Jones played a Robert Johnson record for him. Keith asked, "Who is that on guitar?" Brian replied, "That's Robert Johnson." Keith said, "I KNOW Robert Johnson is playing, but who's the other guy." Brian smiled and said, "There is no other guy. THAT'S Robert Johnson." Not many players can play so well it makes a guy like Keith think there are two guys playing. These two are as deserving as anybody to be included on this list.

Now, remember the catagory, guys...guitarists you've NEVER heard of but should. Zappa, SRV, Carlos, Gary Moore, Buddy Guy and Robert Johnson are all well known dudes and belong on any "guitar players" list. As always...thank you for the opinions

Randy, you're right. But when you say "...you've never heard of" that really depends on who's reading the list. I would just point out that when you hear people discussing great guitar players, you almost NEVER hear them mention Robert Johnson. And it never ceases to amaze me how many people who consider themselves to be music fans haven't heard of him. A former member of my band, who is a guitar player for Christ's sake, was visiting me one day and I played him a video of the late great Freddie King and he said, "Who the hell is Freddie King." After I picked my jaw up off the floor I couldn't decide whether I should denounce him as a musician or just kick his ass on sheer principle. I would submit that many of the guitarists who have been mentioned so far (Santana being the exception) are still anonymous to as many people as they are known by. It's sad, but I love ignorant people because they make me feel so superior. And a final note. After I posted my first comment I went straight to Amazon.com and ordered 2 Django Reinhardt CD's. To paraphrase Kent...those who don't agree that Reinhardt is one of the best ever simply do not understand what they're hearing. I would add, there are a lot of people who would fall into that catagory. To them I say, "Thanks for making me feel superior."

after I posted I said to myself
"GOD I LEFT OUT ZAPPA" then I said
"and I left out Adrian Belew and
Jeff Beck and SONNY SHARROCK"
Damn have you guys heard Sonny Sharrocks last album before he passed away "ASK THE AGES" ? you MUST spend the $15 and hear it...if
coltrane had played guitar he would
have sounded like SONNY SHARROCK .
