Woe is Mr. Imus

I remember when Don Imus was a top 40 jock. Funny, profane, rude and about as creative with a 13.5 second intro to a song as anyone. Funny dude, used to refer to MTV as MVD.

Well, he's done gone and did it. he called the Rutgers basketball team a bunch of "nappy headed 'ho's". Now he's facing the wrath of Al Sharpton and everyone else. So, does that mean when rappers and hip hoppers call women 'ho's and bitches that they will feel the wrath of Reverend Al?

Didn't think so. Double standard. I am so tired of playing that game. Hip hop and rap artists can deface and defile women all they want and that's OK. When Imus does it, he almost loses his job. Don't get it.

UPdate: Thank you Bonnie for your comments and your unique perspective. Imus is done. Noone is gonna go near this guy. He's toast. It saddens me. He was wrong, he knows it. Maybe on a bright side it will start a dialogue on this being a double standard. Let's get riled up about disrespecting women. I hope that happens.

Generally, I don't like were some "radio" has gone in recent years. He should not have said what he said, but has a right to say it and maybe even broadcast it...although what ever happened to being, "held in public trust as a public trustee" (old FCC language). You have made a valid point and one that was made last night on KTRS, rap stars (I use that term loosely) can do it and no Sharpton/Jackson. Either it is accepted by all, or none.

Love your Blog...wished we had met in another "radio" life.

It's sooo not okay, but they keep making records including that very material... The protests (in and outside the Black community) are not covered in the mainstream media. Those cries of protest fall on deaf ears because hip-hop is where the money is, mayne. :( Jill Scott will NEVER earn as much money as 50 Cent or even Tupac (who is worth more dead than he was alive).

((HUGS)) Randy...

And it's not just Black women being disrespected. Shirley Chisholm said when she ran for President that gender trumps race. We ain't special. But don't get me started on the snails pace that NOW took in taking a stand against the comments of Imus and his sidekick (who was allegedly hired to make the Black jokes on the show, so Don wouldn't get blamed).

Black women aren't special in being disrespected and denigrated. But, some women are more valued than others.

Couldn't agree more, rap artists get away with everything! Then you got the NAACP to back them up, so it's a lose lose situation!
